How to change a Lamy fountain pen nib

How to change a Lamy fountain pen nib

Ross Adams |

Most fountain pen nibs can be removed for cleaning or changing nib width but the process in which to do so can be different for each brand of fountain pen.

It is important to make sure you remove your fountain pen nib correctly as not to damage the nib or pen or void a manufacturers warranty.

These instructions apply to all Lamy models apart from the Lamy 2000 which has a different nib setting. Lamy Safari, AL Star, Studio and Joy all use the same nib so they can all be swapped with each other.

  • To start with, swapping nibs may be a cleaner job if your flush out your pen first. Then just start by holding the pen in one hand and holding the sides of the nib between your thumb and fore finger of the other hand and gently pull. The nib should slide away from the feed.
  • Some pens may need a little more encouragement so a quick tip is to use a small bit of Sellotape put across the nib, width ways, and pull away from the feed with the tape. Another method to get a good grip is to use a small piece of rubber grip or kitchen rubber glove to pull off the nib.
  • To put the new nib back onto your pen, just slide it over the grooves on the feed.
